«Casablanca» (1942)

"As Time Goes By"
Music and lyrics by Herman Hupfeld

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

The ultimate classic movie!
One of those few films you can watch over and over again, and every time you'll find something you hadn't noticed before.
In fact, the more times you see it, the better it gets…
Now you all know I'm a hopeless, incorrigible romantic…

there is only one thing better than being a hopeless romantic....and that is to be a successful one!

Stay romantic!

Meu caro Ric(k)

By the way, can you forgive me?
Um abraço.

And now Ricardito, we'll always have Lisbon, too (check out the bottom left hand column of my blog). Cheers and good morning. Time for me to open up a new bottle of wine and to get to bed.

Oh Ric! I've known that you were a hopeless romantic since I first started reading your blg!

I *LOVE* that movie!! The actors and scenes, the script, the music. All are stamped in my brain.

For some reason I never saw this movie in it's entirety.

You remind me I'll have to rent it again and watch it once and for all.

Thanks.

I do think you and I are the same!?

Tongzhi disse...

Bom filme! Mas não vai dar para ver hoje!

RIC disse...

Hello, dear Kevin! Thank you so very much for those kind words of yours! I'll do my best!...
Are you back home now? I hope you've had a great time «down south»!
Have a great week! :-)

Great quote, Will! One of my favourite ones! I really LOVE this film!!!
Wow! Having a party, huh? How marvellous! Opening up a bottle of wine, and enjoying a great evening!
Have a nice Sunday!
(I'll be checking your blog soon!)
Yes, we'll always have Lisbon too... Definitely! :-)

E todas as mensagens políticas! Magistral!

Well, dear Gray, I just cannot help it! I have this film on DVD, but last night I had to watch it once again on TV (a great copy, by the way, b&w, of course!).
Superb!!! Another high quality affinnity between us! I'm really glad about it!
There's no way we can not love it more and more!
Wish you the best, dear friend!

RIC disse...

Maybe we are, dear Joel, maybe we are...
I do think you should watch it «once and for all», as you say. In «Casablanca» Lisbon is a promise of freedom, which in those days was really true...
I'm sure you'll enjoy it very much!
Have a great Sunday! :-)

Ric,

I watch "Casablanca" ritually, at least once a year!

But I'm not really sure the film is really all that romantic. After all, Ingrid Bergaman goes off with her husband out of sense of duty, leaving Bogart, the man she really loves, with just memories of Paris. "Romantic" would be sacrificing all for love; in Casablanca it's love that is sacrificed for a rather conventional sense of duty and propriety. From the perspective of the film, it's a heroic sacrifice, but that's just a skillful manipulation. But, on the other hand, it was 1942, and during the War you couldn't have people abandononing duty for love, could you?

Last night I saw Renoir's "Les règles du jeu" (The rules of the game.) (1938), which, in a very different context and form of expression (It's nominally a farce), handles these same issues, and comes to the same conclusions, but in a much more complex fahion.

But I still intend to keep on watching Casablanca ritually, at least once a year!

Boa semana!

:-)

Hello, dear Bruce! I've just come back from your blog, and was now thinking about a comment to your latest post… Great text, very interesting reasoning! Thank you, once again!
I'll have to disagree with you, as far as what «romantic» stands for is concerned. Heroes and heroines are still romantic even if their loves are impossible, even if they die for them, even if lovers have to go separate ways. «Sacrificing all for love» no matter what is a somewhat more modern conception of «romantic love».
As to the film itself, I do agree with you: it's no romantic work of art at all. As you say, it couldn't ever be. After all, it was 1942… The political circumstances wouldn't allow such an ending: resistance had to go on its work, and to be honest I really don't know till this day what is more valuable to Ilsa Lund: her love for Rick or her «worship» for Victor…
On the other hand, I was referring to myself: I am the helpless, incorrigible romantic for being so attracted to this kind of plots, either in art or in daily life… I too shall go on watching «Casablanca» every now and then.
My best wishes for 2007!

Olá Carla! Boa noite!

Quanto a «Casablanco» prefiro e versão a preto e branco.
E tu?
Um abraço! :-)
