Supper with the Dead…

«Young people used to neglect death, even to olympically ignore it; nowadays they fear it. What on earth happened?»

Here's an odd, somewhat spooky challenge, no doubt, but I kinda fancy it! Something to be taken à la Don Giovanni, I'd say...

«Which 11 dead souls from History would you invite for a dream – or a nightmare… – supper? State your reasons.»

As I am a little bit «more papist than the pope himself» (as we all Portuguese usually are), I've decided to have two suppers: one to settle some things right with Portuguese History, and another to satisfy my worldwide curiosity.
As to you, dear blogger friends, just follow what your hearts tell you to. You'll surely find your own method.

3. Fernão Mendes Pinto, para me contar as verdadeiras barbaridades dos portugueses no Oriente.
4. D. Sebastião, para me deliciar com bichices renascentistas.

«Don Giovanni, a cenar teco m'invitasti!»

And here are my cosmopolitan guests:

1. Nefertiti: what a beauty queen's life was like in Ancient Egypt.
2. Plato: looking me in the eye, why he bans poets from the city.
3. Alexander Magnus: what was harder – conquering the largest empire ever or keeping his lover's love?
4. Hadrian: how correct and adequate Yourcenar's novel is.

5. Torquemada: how hot it is living in a luxury condo in hell.
6. Michelangelo: how grand it was for an artist to be great and gay.
7. Mozart: a cheerful genius is a must at a supper table.
8. Marquis de Sade: what drove him so far.
9. Queen Victoria: all of her love affairs out in the open.
10. Einstein: what the Universe holds in store for us humans.
11. Marguerite Yourcenar: now she'll have to tell nothing but the truth.

Import this «challenge» to your blogs if you feel like it. It's great fun!
Please take this as only a weekend amusement. There's nothing else to it, really.
Thanks, dear Will, for the lush idea!

Rsrsrs!!!

Que belo «cardápio»! E as razões das escolhas...estão demais!:-)
«Roubava-te» uns quantos convivas para a minha mesa. Nomeadamente: Gil vicente, Bocage, Camilo Castelo Branco, Pessoa, Mozart, Einstein , Yourcenar.

I'd die for an invite.

Livra! Rsrsrs!
Um abraço para ti também! :-)

RIC disse...

Hello dear Minge!
That's not the point of it at all, you know. Being alive is the condition that allows you to invite whoever you want.
You're obviously invited! No need to die for an invite! Lol!
Best wishes! :-)

Minge disse...

Invite me to nibble on your meaty sausage. Go on. You know you want to.

RIC disse...

... Is anything the matter, dear Minge?... I most strongly suspect it is...
I do wish you all the best possible!

T-Bird disse...

Another great post. And the music will be left to play on as I work on other things. Cheers!!!

RIC disse...

Hello dear Will!
As you wish, dear friend! I told you I'd do it, but it took me quite a while to select both a few people and the reasons for the invitation. Not easy at all! Lol!
Cheers! :-)

T-Bird disse...

I forgot.

Me? Well... Hum… Franklin D. Roosevelt -- a fabulous president, and always ready for elegant dinners. Always served with pre dinner cocktails, and post dinner nightcaps, and always great conversation.

Queen Elizabeth I...I would want her to know that her love -- England -- became great and thrived because of her. She was one incredible woman.

Shostakovich...I would probably be asking him hundreds of questions about specific passages in his works. I'd get him to stay the night if I could and be up late talking all night.

Duke Ellington -- Oh my god what a wonderful artist he was. I would want him to perform for Shostakovich who I am sure would love his compositions

Tchaikovsky -- Another one I could take to for hours and hours and hours. Would LOVE for him to find out how LOVED he is by the ages. He was a tortured soul, and a gentle gay man.

Lincoln... One of the Greatest of all Americans. I met him once -- long story.

Maybe Bette Davis and Joan Crawford just to get to classic screen actresses on a cat fight. And Bette played Queen Elizebeth twice in her career -- young Elizebeth and old Elizebeth

Greta Garbo -- If I were a woman I would be like her.

Miles Davis. Add him to the sub group of musical greats. Oh the fun we could have with them all performing bits for us all after dinner.

Maybe Stalin, so that Shostakovich could send him packing back to his jail cell in hell w/o dinner.

When Stalin is ejected by Shostakovich, we’ll fill his seat with Rev. Martin Luther King Junior. Another incredible American. Oh I could listen to him take all night, too.

... The very best of your list, dear Will, are no doubt the marvellous, personal reasons you add to each name! And some don't even by far seem to be interesting at all! Lol! Joking!
Thank you very much!
Cheers! :-)

Minge disse...

I'm a bit worried, yes. I've been coughing since January...! You are very perceptive.

May I copy/steal this blog article and make it my own?

RIC disse...

Hello dear Minge!
No, I'm not that perceptive, as a matter of fact. I did read one of your recent posts about going to the doctor. But as you made some jokes about it, I just didn't feel I should comment on it anyway... Sorry! Please take really good care! No one should take health either for granted or too lightly. Bear that in mind, will you?
You know you can, dear friend! I did so myself and wrote anyone can do it if he/she feels like it! Go ahead and amuse yourself! It was great fun to me.
Best wishes! :-)
