He was still living in Lisbon, and the Portuguese Language Society invited him to take part at a meeting with foreign university students, who were attending a summer course of Portuguese language and culture organized by the Society.
He was well-known already; his presence at different events was highly required, but he gladly acquiesced in spending a whole August afternoon with the students and with us teachers. A wonderful afternoon indeed!
He addressed the students mainly about Memorial do Convento, but he also spoke about the book I still like best, exactly the one he told me back then he liked best too. In it Saramago reveals an astonishing, wondrous knowledge of Pessoa's poetic work.

If you happen – by one of those unexplainable misfortunes in life… – not to have read this great literary masterpiece yet, I strongly advise you to do so as soon as possible… [Laughing out loud!]
Should your problem be the language, I believe you have no admissible excuse anymore, have you now?…
Saramago doesn't need any kind of advertising besides his own work, but this particular masterpiece is a landmark indeed in 20th century Portuguese literature and culture.
Enjoy it lavishly if you please!
