«Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas»

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light,
From now on,
Our troubles will be out of sight.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
Our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow.
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough,
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

The heart warming Christmas song "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was immortalised by Judy Garland when she sang this song to Margaret O'Brien and brought tears to the eyes of the audience.

– … And it still brings! I cannot help them every single time I listen to it.

The lyricist for "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was Ralph Blane and the haunting music was composed by Hugh Martin.

– God bless them! Geniuses, no doubt!

The song "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was first published in 1943.

– Oh my God, my Mother was only thirteen years old!

"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is undoubtedly one of the saddest Christmas songs of the century.

– In 1943 what else could be expected if the whole world was at war? And yet it still is one of the most beautiful ever… I'm right now listening to the version sung by Rosemary Clooney. Heavenly delicious! Join me on this Christmas Day!

Is that of tradition? Being kissed if you sit under the mistletoe? I know nothing about that... Do you know why is it so, Joel?
Well, mhhooouuuuaaaaa back to you then! Lol!
Have a GREAT Christmas Day!

Just watched it, and have a double DVD (one is behinds the scenes info and interviews).
Here is an official addendum for your blog from Professor Grape (one of my personas that you have not met until today).

Did you know that there are *three* sets of lyrics he wrote?

Original Set: Very dark. Fits the movie scene, and the war time story that you tell, but Judy thought people would think her a monster if she sang them to a little girl as she does in the film. Singers are starting to go back to this lyric. James Taylor, for example, did this version on a cd a couple of years ago.

Set Two: This is what Judy sings in the movie. Sweetened up, and yet still melancholic at the same time as the anticipated good times are still not here today but put off into the future. This is the preferred set by people who like music

Set Three: A sugary sweet “no sadness is allowed” version written years later on the request of that arrogant ass Frank Sinatra. This is the one you most often hear sung these days. These lyrics are an abomination and should be banned for eternity as it turns this sensitive number into a cheesy Las Vegas cocktail lounge number. P.U. Unfortunately these are the lyrics you are showing for this blog. You must remove them immediately as they absolutely are unconnected to the story you tell, and are NOT what Judy sings.

Original Version:
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
It may be your last
Next year we may all be living in the past
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Pop that champagne cork
Next year we may all be living in New York.
No good time like the olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who were dear to us
Will be near to us no more.
But at least we’ll all be together
If the Lord allows
From now on we’ll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Judy Version:
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yuletide gay
Next year all our troubles will be far away.
Once again, as in the olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who were dear to us
Will be near to us once more.
Someday soon we’ll all be together
If the fates allows
Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Thank you so very much, Will, for your magistral lesson! I'm really impressed!
Today's Christmas Day, Will! A day to celebrate Peace and Understanding. So I'll just do as if I hadn't read I an supposed to do this or that «immediately»... That won't ever happen. It's too late for anyone to order me what to do... I'm really far too old for that, dear Will! After all, this is just a song, a simple pretext to think of friends and family. Nothing else. I'd rather you wouldn't repeat that tone with me.
I wish you a GREAT Christmas Day from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you, Will! I do appreciate it. I love listening to Judy Garland. And to her daughter, by the way...

Thank you, dear Ric! I love that song as well but, believe it or not, I have never thought of it as melancholy. Of course, I grew up with Judy's version and I just thought of it as a wistful, wishful song and tune.

Thanks to Will (aka "The Thunderbird") for his historical footnotes - just chock-full of information.

I hope you had a happy day!

RIC disse...

Hello Gray! I've had a wonderful day, even better than I had expected, thank you! I sincerely hope yours was great as well!
Polemics apart, this song is a very beautiful one, even if it's also sad. I believe sadness is as important as many other feelings.
Best wishes!

Felicidades! :-)
