Feriado Nacional: Implantação da República (1910)

Professo a mesma verdade.

«A minha Pátria é a Língua Portuguesa.»

1. A bandeira verde e rubra.

2. «A Portuguesa».

Heróis do mar, nobre Povo,
Nação valente, imortal,
Levantai hoje de novo
O esplendor de Portugal!

Entre as brumas da memória,
Ó Pátria, sente-se a voz
Dos teus egrégios avós,
Que há-de guiar-te à vitória!

Às armas, às armas!
Sobre a terra, sobre o mar,
Às armas, às armas!
Pela Pátria lutar
Contra os canhões marchar, marchar!

Saudai o Sol que desponta
Sobre um ridente porvir;

Sorry, Joshua, once again I cannot see the core of your questions, or of your doubts, as far as my person is concerned. I believe my English is sufficient for me to communicate with others without major misunderstandings. I guess - can only guess (these translation machines should be upgraded or thrown away) - your question is: why the hell does this Portuguese guy want to make part of an American collective blog? You do not insult me at all just by asking questions, Joshua, but I'm not supposed either to read between the lines of a text of a person I actually don't know. That's just not possible. Whatever you want to know, please be straightforward in your questions.
There are private matters I obviously do not divulge or comment in a public space.
And please don't use Altavista or whatever that is! It only makes understanding a lot worse.
Have you browsed through my blog? Does it really give the feeling that I am «isolated in Europe»?
Sorry, I really don't understand your concern...

Oi, Ric.
Enfim, as ditaduras.

Dear friend,

On this day, I'll permit you this rather touching relapse into nationalism.

and BTW, your English is superb. Muito melhor que o meu portugues!

have a good holiday!

RIC disse...

Very well, Bruce, I do thank you for it. But instead of nationalism, which I abhor, I prefer to translate Fernando Pessoa's sentence (on the post): «My Fatherland is the Portuguese Language»...
And that's where I'm also at home.
Thank you very much!
My best regards to Venice! Tenho saudades de Veneza! Yes, I long for Venice...

Minge disse...

Viva la republica!

Gray disse...

I salute your nation and its very special day!

[As an aside: Your English is far superior to my Portuguese!]

Jack disse...

Just dropped by to say Hi!?

Hi!?

RIC disse...

Yes, Minge, I knew you would cry out «Long live the Republic!» To say it in Portuguese - and not in Spanish, which would sound here quite suspicious, as you can well imagine - you just have to drop that «l» in «la» - so it's «Viva a República!»
Go ahead and fight your fights! :-)

RIC disse...

Thank you very much, Gray!
Regardless of how much better or worse each one of us speaks this or that language, main thing is people do communicate with each other all over the world and exchange ideas, convictions, and emotions.
All the best for you, Gray! And for your writing as well! :-)

RIC disse...

Hello Joel! Did you drop? I guess you'll have to stand up again, won't you, Joel?... It may be dangerous when one just drops like that... (lol!)
Have a nice day! :-)

Yes, Ric, I agree totally with you and, of course, Pessoa. The soul of a people is in their language. I feel very much the same way about English and, strangely enough, the local dialect of my adopted city, Venice. (Contrary to the rumors of Venice's death as a city, Goldoni's plays in Venetian are still regularly performed here, and draw large audiences.)

The Nazis understood this all to well when they tried to cast the German language into their own image. Even now there are certain words and phrases that you simply can't use in German because of their Nazi resonances.

RIC disse...

I couldn't agree more with you, Bruce! Great news you bring to me about Goldoni's plays. That's quite encouraging as far as the struggle for regional cultures is concerned. Decentralization (both political and cultural) is an important movement here in Portugal these days.
As to German, when I first started learning it in the 70's, that matter was still an uncomfortable topic...
(Check out next post... Surprise!)

Minge disse...

If we don't find the right solution, will there be a revolution?

RIC disse...

Are you looking forward to one, Minge? Well, to be honest I miss and long for the second half of the 70's here in Portugal, when I did feel as a revolutionary - more than I was in fact...
Yet, a globalised revolution is no piece of cake... But then again no revolution has ever been, has it?...
Enjoy your Autumn holidays! :-)
